This is a big laptop and like the other reviewer, it said it is strange looking. However, if you are not so intimidated by its looks its performance and accoutrements will impress you. I use it for Work (Web Development) and Home (Playing CSS and other Steam Apps). This laptop is more than enough for all the games and applications you can throw at it. The only downside is it is 64 bit and some older applications will not install. Its not that they done run, Vista will not even install them. No biggy, most larger applications are available in 64-bit if you just check the manufacturers website for updates. Usually you can load the 64-bit version online and use your 32-bit license. Of course, it varies a lot.

The screen is amazing and works well with my 32" ViewSonic HDTV and my Sony 1080i LCD Projector. This is a gaming laptop all the way, more power than needed for running office automation software. I suggest shopping around; I got mine for 49 a few weeks ago. In addition, note there are no restore discs, it is all on the laptop so back it up when you first get it.

Just sent a Sager back. The sound was horrid, and its 1080 matt screen made colors so dull and text much too small to easily read. The Qosmio's 4-5 speaker sound Hardmon (sp?) makes my heart sing. Mouth dropping quality, truly. And the 17 inch bright screen is a joy to watch for hours on end. The computer is cool enough and light enough to sit in your lap. Can also be found for terrific prices at your large local brick and mortar electronics store. For amazing sound on a laptop NOTHING is better. My gaming daughter is going to love it; just hope it doesn't impact her college GPA(smile).

This is the best gaming laptop i've purchased. It has amazing graphic ability, lots of memory, and the sound system is great too. I loved the fire-y design, and red is my favorite color. I bought this several months back for my bedroom to replace my 19" analog tv that I had for decades. Initially the 22" looked smaller to me than my old RCA but I know that's not really the case. It's very lightweight, the picture is sharp and needs very little tweaking. There are plenty of ports for plugging in dvd players, game systems, etc. There is a HDMI port as well. It also has a vga port so you can plug in a computer, I've done that a few times to prove I could do it. The display was great.

The remote has sleep mode which I love. And the buttons on the remote gets you to where you have stuff plugged in. I can click Video and have my game system be on it while Computer will show my laptop plugged in. It's simplistic enough not to confuse the average person. I'm on satellite and the receiver recognized this tv very quickly.

A few things makes this review lose a star. The speakers are okay; not fabulous just okay. Since it's a bedroom and I don't plan to buy a surround sound system for them, it will have to do. The other thing that drives me nuts is if you turn on closed captioning the captions are so tiny you need a magnifying glass to read them. I've tried monkeying in the settings but I can't figure out how to make the captioning any larger. This probably won't bother 99% of the population though. I just like to have the captioning on if I have to mute the tv, but not if I have to squint or sit practically nose to nose with the tv.

Overall it's a good tv for the price. Not perfect but not the worse out there by any means.

This HP nx7400 is my third HP laptop in about the last two years. I still have the other two (models with the AMD 64 CPU and dedicated graphics cards) with which I was (and am) very satisfied (see the "all my reviews section"). They were single core CPU devices.

This is an Intel Core 2 Duo with two CPU cores, the latest model which is 20% faster than the original Core Duo (according to Intel).

It flies! The setup went flawlessly. I took advantage of the HP Recovery software to create a DVD Recovery disk (2 actually) which will allow me to restore it to original software state in the event of a serious crash which a reload repair will not fix. Also, if I sell this in a couple of years, wiping and reformatting the HD then restoring Windows from these disks will provide a clean drive for the next owner.

It comes with Intervideo WINDVD which played my first DVD movie flawlessly with no setup required - I just inserted the disk and enjoyed excellent quality video on the display. The 15.4" screen is marvelous for both websurfing and watching videos.

MY model had bluetooth as well which I plan to use with my Palm TX and my Canon Pixma 450 all-in-one. I hate cables. In a future paradise, there will be no cables anywhere.

It is lighter than my prevous HP laptops by about two and a half pounds at 5.5 pounds. Very welcome. The power brick is much smaller. It has a dark blue/grey cover, otherwise all black.

An important feature for me, since I use the Sprint Aircard 580 PC card, is access to WLAN (gets me on the internet anywhere using 1900 MHz cell frequency) through the PC type II card slot on this HP. I have to tell you it is becoming hard to find an HP laptop that still has it. HP seems to have decided to go over to the new ExpressCard 54/34 slot standard which is theoretically faster. Nonetheless, many of us out here in the real world still have PC card devices which we cherish (you'll never get my Aircard away from me!)

The keyboard needs to be mentioned: it is the finest laptop keyboard I have used. You don't need to buy an IBM or Lenovo to get a top of the line keyboard.

A useful thing to know while talking about the keyboard is that it is relatively easy to remove (unscrewing two torx screws on the bottom of the computer - download the service manual to see where they are) and just unlatching four small thingees between the function keys. Why would you want to do this? Aha! You can easily replace the system board core memory unit yourself and not have to pay a tech over 0 to do it when you finally decide to upgrade to two gigabytes of core memory or more (it will use up to four gigabytes of core!) The other matching (each must be the same capacity and type of DDR2 laptop memory board) slot is easily acessible from the bottom with just a small phillips screwdriver. Just carefully unlatch the side clips and raise it a bit and pull the old memory out.

How much did this beauty cost? Only 0 on HP's own website in the business laptop section (which I don't usually look through); guess I just got lucky. If you can find a better buy in the most up to date HP laptop for this price or less, you're a better shopper than I am. My hat's off to you.

The shipping date that HP gave me when I ordered it online slipped by about ten days, but with my two day UPS blue shipping it finally arrived in a relatively small light box within a box.

HP does not give you the Windows XP operating system on CDs anymore with this model. As mentioned elswhere here, you create your own backup disk with CDs or DVD (recomended).

I went online after installing my Sprint Aircard 580 software without any problems (such as conflicts with the modem port) and downloaded some of my favorite software available free on trial or at reasonable prices.

AVG anti-virus is my favorite; it is excellent but unobtrusive. I uninstalled the Norton software it came with.

Next was SnagIt, the very competent screen capture program; there's practically nothing it won't capture, including video. Love it.

Then came Registry Mechanic. You're a sitting duck for an eventual crash, caused by corrupt registry table, if you don't have it and run it regularly. I know, it happened to me. That's why I use it.

I'll update this review as time goes by with further comments about its usefulness as they unfold.

Highly recommended!

ADDENDA: Six months have passed since I wrote this review and the HP Compaq nx7400 is still fast even with a lot of software loaded on it, it has no dead pixels, I still like the keyboard, it still will carry on like gangbusters even when AVG is doing a security scan of the HD.

After about a year, I upgraded the core memory to two gigabytes. It was easy - just remove the keyboard (see above) to place 1GB there, and take off the bottom plate for the memory slot there to replace that with the other 1GB. Loads faster. No slowdown when many browser tabs open. Recommended easy upgrade.

And a little note about the Sprint Aircard 580 WLAN PCMCIA for surfing the web or checking e-mail - there is a download available to upgrade it somewhat (not to revision A, which really boosts the upload speed. you need a new card for that. Sprint has several in USB, PCMCIA, or expresscard standards) so that speeds have increased 20 to 100 percent. Just north of Boston I get over 1000 Kbps download and over 120 Kbps upload. Not too shoddy from over the air - the fastest dialup speeds I've ever gotten. But get a new card with Rev A if you can, it's even better.

ADDENDA (another)
At the THREE year point this beauty is still going strong with additional upgrades such as 4GB of core memory now. No hardware problems. The core 2 duo is a champ that runs Windows XP fast. I may upgrade to Windows 7 in a year or so. It should handle it. And I'll be getting a 320GB hard drive by then, too.

Very decent workhorse - Sebastian Haselbeck - Germany
I had to get a new portable computer because my old thinkpad died. Due to financial constraints I had to go for something that was close to a Thinkpad, and I decided for this HP. Reviewers all over the place have indulged in what it can and not, I just want to share some pluses and minuses with you

PLUS:
- For a midsize widescreen laptop relatively light and thin
- a bright and glossy display
- nice design
- available in many configurations (1GB Ram and core2duo recommended, for Vista at least 2GB RAM and a rambo-style graphics adapter)

MINUSES:
- loud keyboard (that's where it pays off to get a thinkpad)
- no thinkpoint/intellipoint navigation stick (damnit)
- a little louder than expected from a 2007 laptop computer
- warms up easily under heavy duty
- display works like a pretty good mirror
- the screen resolution could be higher
- no bluetooth
- 1 GB RAM spread over two slots 512meg each, bummer

All in all, a decent workhorse, that doesn't compare to a similarly equipped Thinkpad T series for example, but then again, it costs almost 400 bucks less than such one. I don't want to sound pessimistic, but if it's not about the money, aim a little higher.
If you look for a really modestly priced business laptop, this might just be one of the best out there, compare to simliar Thinkpads, Toshibas and Dells.

Great system, really nice design and fast enough for any of the basic stuff I do. I bought more memory and after installing it was much faster. The raw system out of the box comes with allot of free evil ware, but once you clean it up the system is really nice and fast, but I would clean all that stuff off at least turn it off, it really takes up allot of resources.

One thing that is nice but also strange is the keypad, you get a nice big keyboard with a keypad and having a keypad is really nice if you are using it to do numbers. But it does move the keyboard over to the left and that make it some thing to get used to. But once you figure it out it really works great!

I bought this laptop at an excellent price. For the money, this is a great laptop for those who need to surf webs, microsoft word/excel, movies, burn CD/DVD, etc. Only negative is that it came with Vista and lots of extra softwares I dont need. This laptop came with 1 stick of 2GB of memory, and I bought an extra 2GB (for only ) and installed it. With extra memory, it performs alot faster with Vista and I was able to do more multi-taskings. If you dont like Vista, XP can be installed on this. For the price you cant beat it.

When I saw the Eee PC's, I knew I would eventually get one, or some other kind of netbook. This Dell is a dream, and it does the basic stuff I want-- email, web, video playback, iTunes, and word processing. This is not a gaming PC, something for graphics or modeling software, not for any kind of software that takes up a lot of RAM and processing power, and it's probably not suitable as a main PC for most people. It's a glorified PDA for people who want something more than a PDA, but love the portability. That said, if this is making your mouth water and doesn't sound like a step backward in technology, you've come to the right place.

I looked into the Dell Mini 12s, but decided against one because they're simply not as portable. The Mini 12 has a bigger screen, keyboard and hard drive space, but that also makes the PC bigger and less portable. The Mini 9's smaller keyboard will require a bit of adjustment, epecially if you use the F keys very much since they're integrated with the second row of letter keys. I don't have a problem with the size of the screen, but I can see how some might. Try to look at one of these in person before you buy if you think it might be an issue.

The Mini 9 will handle 2GB of RAM, but it can only be shipped with up to 1GB because of the software license with Windows XP. Thank you Miscrosoft for another slap in the face! I mean, anything's better than getting a machine with Vista on it, but REALLY. Dell also put the RAM cap on the Mini9s with Ubuntu, which really makes no sense... Anyway, it's nothing to pop open the cover, put in your extra GB of RAM, close it, and have the zippiest little netbook around. (I think it will handle a 4GB stick, but then you're looking at power and heat issues.) When you turn it on, it's ready to go in no time, even without a memory upgrade! Also, decompress the drive. Compression doesn't save that much space and it runs better. If hard drive space is an issue, add an external drive, thumb drive or SD card.

It doesn't come with a DVD drive, but how often do you really use one? I only use mine to install software and to rip my CDs to iTunes. I don't do either of those things when I'm out and about, and remember, it's all about that portability! Eventually you will need to buy a DVD drive, but you might not need one right away. Also plan on investing in an external mouse if you don't like touchpads. This one is particularly irritating because it's so small. I can't really comment on how this or anything else affects battery life, since I rarely run on the battery. The speakers are really small, so have some headphones on hand if sound is a problem for you.

I got it and immediately covered it with one of those sticker skins later to keep it from getting scratched. It's a glossy finish that you just know is going to get sandpapered if you carry other stuff in your bag. (And who doesn't?) I also got the webcam and bluetooth options, even though I have no use for either of them. That was because hubby will eventually inherit this when I buy something else, so I wanted him to be able to expand this however he would need.

My only other gripe is that when you use this in public, you get a lot of people coming up to interrupt you to talk about it. It's not Dell's fault, but if you need to get something done, don't do it in Starbucks where you'll be interrupted about every 30 seconds. Come on, it's the 21st century! It's difficult to accomplish anything in an environment like that. I had the same problem with my PDA and folding keyboard, and when it started to happen again, I wanted to cry... but my Mini won't let me.

Overall, this is 4 1/2 stars, but the drawbacks are nothing when I can put this in my purse, go to Borders, do my thing, and get out without the achy shoulder. I always wanted a small laptop like this, light enough to carry around, small, with PC power and feel. Now that I have one, the sky is clear, birds are singing and velvet ropes have parted-- well, not really, but this is about as close as I can get.

For the record, I am a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator and a Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist. I've used PCs since before what we know of as "Windows". I have used multiple operating systems and servers from Microsoft over the years, and I am a TechNet subscriber. I also work in an IT/Desktop Support role at my place of business, which is 100% Microsoft. I have four PCs - my work Dell, my Gateway P-7805u FX Edition (lovingly referred to in this review as "Big Poppa"), my Gateway netbook from Verizon Wireless, and an Acer AspireRevo that is basically a media server. I have built PCs, troubleshot PCs, installed, configured, and reconfigured PCs, and work with virtual machines all day long.

But something was missing. As much as I love every machine I own, something was missing. I'm not new to Apple - my first personal computer was an Apple IIc, where I wrote my first Hello World program in BASIC. At school I used Apple IIe computers where the Games folder was restricted by the teachers. My mother then bought a Mac Performa from the MacMall that used to be in San Diego in the late 80's/early 90's for 2000 bucks, which was my first color computer. When I started working at 18, my exposure to Macs dwindled as I saw companies were always using PCs. It was a shock moving to Windows, but I started to see how intuitive the Windows environment really was. There was a lot of functionality and detail that allowed me to control my environment like Mac never would allow me to do. In the back of my mind I wanted to return to the world of Mac, if for nothing else than the lower maintenance required versus Windows. I never could, because Macs never dropped price. The Performa my mother bought back in the late 80's had 64MB of RAM, a 200MB hard drive (I think), no Ethernet, no wireless, just a built in 56k modem, and a color screen with a plain CD drive and 3.25" floppy drive. It was heavy and ugly.

Nowadays, Apple is selling iMacs and Mac Pros for roughly around the same price as what they used to sell them for. People continue to buy Macs because they're easy to use for the basic home user, but for the advanced IT person it just wasn't practical. But then it all turned upside down; Mac OS (formerly System) went to a more open format, based on standards like Unix, which opened the door for developers to create applications that worked just as good as the Windows counterpart. Not all is perfect, but it's a step in the right direction, and I wanted a piece. Apple started to cut prices on its MacBook Pro line, and it was finally time to reconsider a return to Mac. But it had to be right - I needed my Windows environment.

And here I am.

You'll want to understand the differences between the various MacBooks. You can get a regular white MacBook for a grand. In terms of power it's average; it's not going to shock you with its speed, but it will get basic jobs done. You shouldn't have to be too concerned about email or browsing, it'll handle those just fine. Snow Leopard strives to improve on things found in the previous version (Tiger) by making efficient use of the power afforded to it by the hardware, and because it's based on the newer operating system core, it's extremely fast and durable. The next step up is the MacBook Pro line, the aluminum unibody. You've likely heard about this line as the premier part of the laptops from Apple, and for good reason. From little things like aesthetic lighting to larger things like full LED screens that are vibrant and easy to read, the MacBook Pro line is where you want to go when you have more demands than the basic MacBook can handle, like virtualization and multi-tasking.

The MacBook Pro 13" comes in two flavors; the 12 hundred bucks version has a 2.26GHz processor and less hard drive space, whereas this one, the 2.53GHz processor and larger hard drive not withstanding, is 3 hundred bucks more. Whether you really need the increased size and space is a matter of discretion on your part; if you're running VMs you should really opt for the larger version. What determines the need to run VMs? Migration, and that's what my review focuses on...migrating from PC to Mac.

I've had Big Poppa since my birthday last year. It's a beast of a laptop, boasting monster specs and touting itself to be a gaming laptop. For me I just needed the power to run the intensive applications I threw at it - and for the most part it took them like a pro. The problem with Big Poppa is that I relied on it so much as a desktop replacement that I did not consider its impact as an actual laptop - it weighs nearly 10 pounds by itself and doesn't fit into many bags. The screen was large and vibrant, but might have been causing me eye strain trying to take in all of the real estate. It was also a fingerprint magnet - something I didn't mind, actually. It ran hot because of the abuse I was putting it through, and it never shut down or overheated due to its cooling, but it got annoying having to hear its fan during these times. It was then I decided to invest in a MacBook Pro, a smaller machine.

This MacBook has identical specs to Big Poppa, except for the screen resolution and size, of course. Where Big Poppa is nearly 10 pounds, the MacBook Pro clocks in at nearly half the weight. I had my concerns about the real estate of the screen versus the 15", but in actually using the laptop it doesn't feel cramped at all. This is mostly due to the various zoom and sizing options found on the applications with just a swipe of the finger. Those familiar with iPod and iPhone will already know these gestures, such as pinching. Some feel like gimmicks to me - like the Expose app - but that's probably because Windows has no such feature and thus I find no need for it. What was really impressive was the speed of Mac OS on the MacBook. From dusk to dawn it only slowed down on two occasions, both of which are preventable, and performed significantly faster than Windows on Big Poppa with the same hardware.

My plan for migration was to load up my Big Poppa configuration into a VM and move it to Mac, running it in VMWare Fusion going forward. This plan fell through, because none of the Mac applications I tried were able to effectively get this done. I tried the Parallels Transporter, VMWare Fusion's conversion agent, and even various backup and imaging solutions that VMWare claimed were compatible, but no matter what I tried, the Mac side would not import the file. I was finally forced to build a new VM with the same OS and processor, and do Windows Easy Transfer. Of course, I lost all of my applications and will have to reinstall them. A word of warning to anyone wanting to make this transition - it is NOT as easy as it should be. After researching it appears there were two issues working against me. First, it seems the migration tools aren't friendly with 64-bit operating systems. Since these are quite prevalent these days this was distressing - and the MacBook Pro's Core 2 Duo is a 64 bit compatible processor, by the way. Second, if you have more than one OS installed on separate partitions, it will fail unless you migrate them all, even if you only want one. This is because it reads the whole drive, not the partition, and will freak if you try to limit it. In Windows it's smart enough to know that you selected a single partition and will take action, but the Mac side does not have the same intuition.

If you choose the VMWare or Parallels route, you'll be able to not only share documents and files seamlessly between the environments, but also applications. So you can dock your Windows applications and they will launch in the VM when you need them, so you don't have to fire up the VM every time you just want to load one application or one file. Also, if you open a Windows document stored on your Mac, it can launch the Windows application from the VM. Using VMWare's Unity mode or Parallels Crystal mode, you can even set it to where these documents and applications open directly in Mac without the need for the VM to be visible. Windows 7 has an analog to this called XP Mode, and it's quite useful if you need that compatibility (which you will).

Startup and Shutdown times on Mac OS are a fraction of Windows 7. Because things only load on startup when you want them to, and because there is no "registry" to preload, nor are there applications that have auto-starting DLLs, it means you are never tethered to the machine for extended periods waiting to get to the desktop. As I said, if you're a quick-and-dirty browsing/email person this computer will do you just fine - but then, I would consider the computer significantly overpriced for such an application.

There are some other issues. Like the fact that Snow Leopard does not seem to understand what "hot swap" means. In Windows XP and above, you can configure the OS to allow certain storage media types to be hot swappable, meaning you can plug and unplug them at will without risk of data loss for the most part via USB or SD card slots. Snow Leopard yells at you for unplugging a device without using the right click --> Eject function. This is seriously annoying and I can't express to you all of the reasons why. The whole benefit of USB in particular is the idea that I don't have to eject it. It's not an IDE, SATA or SCSI device. This one nitpick slows down my entire process and forces me to consider other options besides USB - like networked devices.

An eSATA port would have been nice, as Big Poppa came with one and I learned to love the increased speed of transfers. USB is down to about 15-20MB/second, eSATA is anywhere from 50-100MB/second.

The touchpad is going to take getting used to and in some ways I wish Mac had stuck with the two button format, even if only as an alternate option. The problem isn't the gestures, it's the click. The entire pad is a button and you can configure one corner to be a "right click", but the problem is that those who are accustomed to just tapping the pad (not me...I hate tapping) will get frustrated with the notion that they now have to press harder to get commands to submit. This is especially problematic when navigating folder structures where multiple double clicks are necessary - what a nightmare.

Speaking strictly about the laptop itself, the build quality is solid and it doesn't feel like there are any overly loose parts, although I do find the case design itself to be uninspired. Speck offers a clear case, located here: Speck MacBook 13" See-Thru Hard Case - CLEAR which, when applied, gives the laptop a clear aesthetic appeal that is reminiscent of the Mac Mini and the old iMac computers; no idea why they have not designed them this way by default. The screen hinge is large and centered instead of the classic two-prong variety and feels solid, but the screen moves way too easily for my taste. If you lift the laptop by the wrist pad, the screen flops around loosely; something I'm not used to given none of my other laptops do it. I assume they made it easily movable to appeal to those who complain that laptops are hard to open.

You will notice the laptop is extremely quiet with day-to-day regular usage. It won't turn on the fan hardly at all unless you're doing something intensive. These are the times you might notice slowdowns - for example, when working in VMWare Fusion, I ran a Windows Experience rating and the laptop was brought to its knees. As I type this, I'm processing a video for this review and the fan came on, getting progressively louder as it continues its process. This isn't unusual for computers, but you should realize that while it will be quiet for a basic user, you will hear some noise as you start putting it through its paces.

Some have commented on the glossiness of the screen. I find it annoying only because of the way the screen was designed. Because it's an entire uniform glass surface, it means the reflective nature of the screen is not shielded in any way like with PCs where there is a non-reflective bezel. In other words, on the PC you'd have to be directly in the way of the sunlight or other lighting in order for it to affect you; on the MacBook Pro it's apparent no matter what you do or where you sit. Clearly Apple tried to counter this by using the LED screen's depth and saturation, but it doesn't work in a brightly lit environment. At night it's a thing of beauty, of course. Just keep in mind that it's not designed for outdoor working at all; there are some antiglare overlays, but unless you got the model from Apple that has it built in, it's going to look like a poor alternative.

In short, the MacBook Pro is a solid laptop - still somewhat overpriced, not nearly as much as before, but it is...and your migration path away from PC might be difficult if you were a heavy PC user. If you've never used Mac before you'll want to read all of the documentation you can because you will need to learn most simple things from scratch (Print screen anyone?). If you've used Mac before you should be able to get back into it fairly easily, though some things have changed and not all for the better. I would definitely recommend VMWare Fusion if you are considering a migration, so you can still have Windows available when you need it. There are some things that Windows can give you that Mac OS can't - applications that don't have a Mac version.

My first intro to Apple was in the late 80's. After that, starting in the mid 90's, I stuck faithfully to windows based systems, finally getting frustrated with constant conflicts with software. In December of last year this frustration culminated with my first laptop purchase. I'm so pleased it was an Apple. I've had no problems with mine. It has operated flawlessly. I did initially have problems finding things on it. It's such a simply, seamless system, now that I'm accustomed to it, and beautifully designed. My battery charge hasn't lasted more than 4 hours and there aren't many games for Apple computers. Dragon Age Orgins is one I found that I like for my Apple. I think this is a really great computer and Amazon got it right out to me in one day.

My Apple laptop is satisfactory but not spectacular. Recently Apple has been behaving like a virus( think Norton). They take over the home page uninvited. The Safari web connection is intrusive. The mail system is worthless. Overall perhaps slight edge over Windows, but they are beginning to believe their own hype. The system to use windows documents is expensive and cumbersome.

HP Pavilion DM3-1040US 13.3-Inch Silver Laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) Reviews By Customers

This review is originally for the HP Pavilion dm3 1130us (AMD & ATI model) which is essentially the same except for CPU and GPU and a newer production version.

The DM3z is a good compromise between the portability of a netbook and the functionality of a full sized laptop. Technically in the "Ultra-portable/Thin & Light" category, I would say it is a netbook on steroids. I was looking for a portable computing solution but didn't want a small keyboard or a hard-to-read/small screen. It had to have a small form factor, yet have a more powerful processor and graphics than traditional netbooks. I use it mainly for office work, web surfing, video streaming, music listening and light gaming.

Most of the specs are readily available on Amazon, but you can get a more in-depth overview by going to HP's site and looking up the dm3z line in their Ultra-Portable category. The 1130 is essentially a later production run of the 1030, which is still available on Amazon as of this writing.

Back to what I was looking for;
Basically, I wanted a MacBook but only had about five hundred bucks to spend. I'm a Mac user normally but could not see paying so much for a laptop. I searched high & low and weighed several other options. In this laptop segment and at this price point, it is all about compromise and what you want as an end user. In this end, the 1130us was the best fit for me. I was able to find it on sale for under five hundred on the OfficeMax site and then found a fifty dollar rebate. I used that saving to buy a http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002C1BBU8/ , and so far that is working perfectly too. I was a little leery about getting an HP since they don't have the best reliability reputation, but I would expect more problem reports from a company that sells so many computers. My mother-in-law has a 3 year old Pavilion that still runs like new.

What I like about it:

1. It's fast, faster than I expected. Initial set-up was a snap. The 1.6GHz AMD Athon Neo X2 dual-core processor and ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics see to that. Perhaps not the best combo for intense Photoshop sessions or cutting edge 3D gaming, but I have several apps and browser windows open at once with no system slowdowns. Online video from various sources streams just fine and I've played a number of games (including Star Wars Battlefront) with no issues. The AMD cpu and ATI gpu combo uses more wattage than the Intel option, but I think you would sacrifice computing power for battery life if you went the Pentium or Core Duo route.

1b. 7200 RPM 320GB Hard Drive. Did I say it was fast? And spacious.

2. The screen. It is glossy, but not as bad as some and it is nice and bright. 13.3" w/ a 1366x768 widescreen resolution means things are a bit smaller than on a standard desktop monitor, but everything is nice and crisp and the colors are good. It seems much bigger. HD content looks great on it and the viewing angle isn't bad. I had a stuck pixel, but it went away. The lid opens about 135 degrees back so you can easily work with it on your lap. It has a nice firm hinge so there are no worries of it falling one way or the other.

3. Wi-Fi draft N. I've only had fast and excellent connectivity so far. Having bluetooth is nice too, but I've yet to use it.

4. Windows 7, not a cobbled Started Edition. Coming from OSX, I have to say I'm growing more and more impressed with the latest Windows OS. It seems to have more intricacies than with OSX, but I'm getting used to it and have to say the user interface is top notch. Before this, I've used XP and am so glad that Microsoft has finally refined their product. Connect a device for the first time and either the drivers are already there or they download automatically. Nice. Lots of eye candy too.

5. Touch pad. Some reviewers pan it, but I find it works well for me after a slight learning curve. Sure, it is the only fingerprint magnet on an otherwise lovely case, but I like the feel of the shiny chrome finish and find the multi-finger gestures useful. The "mouse-buttons" could be a little easier to depress, but that is a small quibble, just tap the pad. It is also very customizable to your specific needs. The 1030us touch pad had some wake-from-sleep issues, but that was fixed in the latest BIOS. I also use a http://www.amazon.com/dp/B002OGMNT4 but have no problems adjusting to the touch pad if I leave mouse at the office.

6. 4 USB, 5-in1 card reader, 1 VGA, and 1 HDMI port. Connectivity ahoy!

7. Full sized keyboard. It took a little adjustment, but I like the quiet, island style keys. When in the proper position, I can type just as fast as with my desktop's keyboard. I measured it, and it is slightly LARGER than my G5's primary keyboard area!

8. The case. This is one sturdy feeling case with little or no flex that I can detect. You can hold it by a corner without fear. I love that it isn't a finger print magnet like so many others out there. The brushed aluminum finish is very attractive and gives it a high-end appearance.

9. It came with 4GB DDR2 ram, expandable to 8GB. With the 64bit OS, I could do this, but see no need to at the present time.

10. Cool. Even after all day use the air blowing out of the rear side exhaust vent is only slightly warm. The front wrist rests can get a little warm, but never uncomfortable (at least to me).

11. Quiet. If a completely silent room you can hear the faint breath of the fan, but otherwise it and the spinning hard drive are unnoticeable.

12. Well packaged. There are no disks included, but the manual and documentation are pretty clear.

13. Price. Find this on sale and you've got yourself one heck of a deal!

What's not so great about it:

1. It is about 13" wide and weights about nearly 5 pounds with the battery inserted. For me that's no big deal but if you plan to lug your laptop around a lot, you may want to look at something smaller and lighter. It is only one inch thick so it slides easily into most bags.

2. Speakers. You know going in that they won't be that great, but I still couldn't help being a little disappointed. However, I tweaked the sound settings and get decent output now, though not very loud. It does the job though. Use earphones. I connected it to my speakers with a subwoofer and Pandora radio sounds terrific!

3. Battery life. I get about 4 hours of constant general use life out of it. Another reviewer stated he was able to play the entire Fellowship of the Ring movie before it went into hibernation, but I have not tested that. The good news is that 4 hours is still decent, and the power cord isn't too cumbersome. If you need an all-day, cord-free laptop/netbook, look elsewhere.

4. Some bloatware. Being new to Windows I researched what to do when you first get a computer. One of the most common recommendations is to remove the manufacturer installed software. I got rid of the MS Office trial and Norton. I'll still playing around with the suite of HP software. I may keep some, but will probably ditch a good bit of it. However, some users may like the included software. Even with it, the 1130us is a speedy customer.

5. No optical drive, but I knew that and won't need one every day. The Samsung will also be useful for my other computers.

6. No OS restore disk. I know, there is no optical drive and there is a recovery partition, but it still would have been nice.

7. Possible fit and finish issues. I just noticed a very slight gap along the top right front edge where the wrist wrest meets the side paneling. Pressing down on it does reveal a little flex. Not enough to return it, but it is worth keeping an eye on and could be cause for concern. It is too early to tell. (see my product photos)

I have not used the Quickweb feature, but Windows 7 boots up (after some re-configuration) in less than a minute so I'm not sure I'd need it. I've also not yet used the HDMI out port or webcam. I plan to test both soon and have heard that the webcam is good in low light. I've only been using the 1130us for a little over a week so I can't speak to its long-term reliability, but so far so good. I'll post an update if I have anything new to add.

So, is the dm3 1130us the right model for you? If you are not a 3D gamer and want a nice looking, sturdy, portable laptop without most of the limitations of a netbook, then the answer could be "yes". Of course, technology is changing rapidly and in a few months the next latest and greatest will be out. But if you need something now, and want a lot of oomph at a great value, then the dm3 1130us could be your best bet. It exceeds my expectations at a price point other laptops couldn't match, so that is why I'm giving it 5 (4 1/2 actually) stars.

Almost perfect...almost - AGUIRRE Andres - Spain
I bought this laptop in December 2009 and I have been using it ever since at work and at home. Before buying it, I did an extensive research comparing similar laptops (Asus, Toshiba, Acer) within the thin and light category. The main reasons why I bought it were:

1) Aluminum chasis: It makes a HUGE difference compare to plastic laptops in terms of looks, feel, design, and durability. And I don't have to worry about getting it dirty with my fingerprints.

2) Chiclet keyboard. It is a pleasure to type on this laptop. It would have been better if this laptop had offered a back-lit keyboard option.

3) Thin but not so light: I needed something to carry around without breaking my back and that was easy to slip in my messenger bag. It is not as light as other laptops in the same category but it works for me.

4) Intel Pentium: I wanted a dual core laptop with Windows 7 64-bit. It works perfect for everyday tasks. I was hesitating between buying this laptop and the Intel Core 2 Duo version (never care about the AMD option). I took the Intel Pentium option because I didn't want to spend so much money since I knew that the new iCore processors were going to be in the market this year.

5) No optical drive. I hardly used it with my previous laptop, so I didn't really need it. By the way, my brother gave me an external optical drive as a xmas gift...

HP offered a customized version of this laptop on its website with an Intel Core 2 Duo (2.26 GHz)and a Nvidia GeForce chipset. Actually my dad bought this option with Windows 7 Professional and it cost him like 1,200 dollars including accesories (optical drive). For that price, I told my dad, I would have bought the 13'' Apple's MacBook Pro. Now he regrets his decision and he learnt the lesson.

Just to cover the flaws of this laptop and why I didn't give it the 5 stars it should have deserved:

1) The mirror trackpad is just frustrating and uncomfortable. Since I always use an optical mouse, I don't really care about this.

2) It does get hot on the left palm area. Since it hasn't burned my hand yet, I don't really care about this.

My second purchase choice was the ASUS laptop, but for my taste it looked too plastic and too cheap. It was thin though but the HP looked much much better.

Great lightweight laptop with some gusto! - Walking - Richmond, VA
This is a great little laptop and works beautifully for the price. I really like this laptop and let me tell you why I find it to be such a great little laptop and why it's such a good deal and SOOO much better than a netbook. I will also tell you the drawbacks as well.

First, it really runs alot better than I thought it would. With Windows 7 and 4gb of ram, this is smooth and rarely have I been able to push it too hard with basic tasks. I use a desktop for most of my serious work (video encoding, picture editing, and long term writing and spreadsheet work). But when I want to go out this almost always goes with me. It can handle anything online well, and I have really been impressed with how good the wireless range and reception are. I had a netbook and got rid of it as soon as I could as it was incredibly slow even with Windows XP. Really almost unusable. This is about 4 times the computer most netbooks are and really only about 0 more. Think of how many hours you will use this for (my guess is over an hour a day for a year). Then realize 50 cents per hour is not that much to be paying.

Second is size and style. I used to have 15.6 inch laptop with a great big old battery graphics card and the whole works. This small laptop has completely replaced it. It's quite thin, beautifully designed with some good use of metal and just well sculpted. It doesn't look like it's just one solid piece, but everything looks like it belongs. Nothing sticks out and it all just feels right. And at under 4 pounds, it weighs as much as about a nalgene full of water. It just looks great.

Battery life is also great. I routinely get 5 hours of video on flights and other things. Also it charges back up in a matter of an hour or so which is really great. It stays pretty cool, and quiet as well the fan noise will not be noticeable in coffee shop or in most meetings.

The keyboard and screen work great, in fact they are some of the best I have had in recent memory. The screen is bright and quite clear, and the keyboard is just rock solid. No flexing at all.

Also it has great connectivity with HDMI I have used this to play movies and TV shows from Hulu on a couple of occasions.

So now onto the not as great stuff.
First the trackpad initially had a few issues (completely freezing after coming out of sleep, and sometimes being weird with the multitouch zoom and scroll). However, there is a software update from HP that completely fixed the problem. Google it and you can get it fixed. Also the buttons on it were stiff at first, but they have loosened up and I quite like them now.

Second, the fan is quiet (my refrigerator in the next room is currently covering the noise) but it's always on. And for some reason the sound isn't as pretty as most fans. It's more true white noise than a whoosh sound most fans make. It doesn't seem to have a nice tone but just be a bit harsh.

Finally, the battery rattles a little bit. I was able to fix this with a piece of paper tucked strategically, but I shouldn't have to do that cmon HP!

Okay so this computer is basically as powerful as most low end laptops out there, it is thinner, lighter and gets better battery life and is more beautiful. As long as you are okay with no DVD drive, go ahead and pick this up. Look for a deal, you should be able to find one for just north of 0 if you wait a week or two and shop the deals.

Finally got my notebook (netbook?) and so far it has been great during the past 2 weeks of operation.
Boots up quickly, decent graphics and the keyboard is easy to use. I was hoping it would play an old game called Beachhead 2002 but it's a little sluggish. But I didn't buy it to play video games and wanted a traveling machine. Was thinking about the 10 inch netbooks but they sounded too small and taking my heavy 17" HP on trips from the Middle East back to the US takes up too much space/weight. Have yet to take it on the road but I think it will do all I need.

I had already purchased the Samsung DVD burner (listed in the ad) in anticipation of getting a smaller notebook and both seem to work well together. Battery life running the burner is yet to be seen but I am impressed with it so far. Of course after running a bigger laptop with shorter life, anything would have longer battery power.

One thing I'm curious about (emailed Acer but no reply) is the Bluetooth indicator and switch on the front. The instructions call out that it is for limited models but I wonder if it's a hardware issue or if software can be added to bring it to life. Currently using the IOGear bluetooth adapter with a BT Microsoft mouse 5000 and it all seems to work very well.

This was a VISA rewards item to myself and as luck would have it, it was sent from Amazon to my Stateside address and then sent over. I still don't understand why Amazon won't ship electronics and some vendors have problems shipping to an APO address but thats just another rant.

Availability of this laptop has been rather limited but I recommend buying this one or similar size unit. It's a great blend of performance and size. Not a speed demon but for a small laptop it's quiet, doesn't heat up (so far)and good performance so I'm glad I was able to get it. The cover design is pretty trick but I guess I was thinking the cover was aluminum as per write ups and the color in photos. Not bad plastic but I was hoping. The inside piece where the mouse is located is aluminum however. I hope this little jewel lasts for a very long time.

I used the computer for about 2 months. So far everything runs well except two things:

1. A main reason I picked this computer was Amazon's description said it came with a CD/DVD drive. This turned out to be not true.

2. Everytime I turned on the computer it took a long time (>5 min) for the computer to link to my home wireless network. I know it is not the wireless network problem because all my other computers link to the network in seconds. But I'm not sure whether it is Window 7 specific. This is my only one running on Window 7 and all others running on Vista or XP.

I first read about the Acer AS1810 in "a leading consumer magazine" (C.R.) where it received high marks for performance. I've had my laptop - the nicely done Olympic edition - about two weeks and have been very happy with it. Programs launch quickly, web browsing is fast and easy (even with downloading large video files), and the touchpad is the best I've ever used - I especially like the `press and scroll' (my own term) feature to scan pages. The large keys provide a good sense of touch, and the display is great. Did I mention that's its lightweight and has 8+ hours of battery life? An outstanding little computer!

After my Toshiba Satelite being stolen a couple of years ago, I have waited quite some time to be able to afford a new one. When I go to purchase, I look for something that can carry me through the next 5 years and something I believe will stand up to the test of time.

So I went with this Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q830 and that was a mistake so far. I love the computer when it won't freeze up. That has been an issue from the beginning.

It's performance is great, love many things about it except it's weight, locking up, the number of programs that come pre-loaded and also the fact that it comes with no software or restore disc but you have to create your own or order one at 24.99 which I had to. I had to eventually send it in for repair after a little over a month and they have had to order new graphics card, hard drive, and mother board to try and find the problem. The only problem with that is the fact the parts are on back order and so now I am without laptop for almost a MONTH!

Well, needless to say, I wouldn't repeat the buy but if it comes back and doesn't have any issues, I would give an overall rating of 4 considering all things about this computer.

I love Toshiba but I have just had a bad experience with this laptop. Also, it likes to over-heat when I am not really gaming but just using quite a bit with software and programs so I had to raise the base up by applying some strips of rubber to create more air flow.

I have a variation of the 1555 Studio configuration which consists of:

1) P8700 Processor
2) 4Gb Ram
3) Full 1080x1920 screen
4) 500gb 7200rpm hard drive
5) ATI HD4670 1GB GPU
6) BlueRay drive

I bought it around Black Friday directly from Dell for just over a grand.

Based on some of the comments/negative reviews of this computer, I'd like to say that I have owned and used Dell computers for over 10 years, and aside from one really crap Optiplex220 workstation, have had nothing but good experiences with them across a diverse range of computers including everything from a Dell Mini 10 to a couple XPS gaming machines (before I got wise and started building my own gaming computers about 5 years ago). As a brand, Dell is frequently maligned for being either cheaply made or offering poor service. I can say that in my experience, neither is true. (And to put that in context I work in a an office with about 8 dell workstations that I am responsible for maintaining, in addition to the Dells I've owned personally). I've gotten great service from them including an overnight battery replacement (under warranty) when it really counted. So, while I recognize that any company as large as Dell is going to have some misses, my personal experience has been excellent.

I'd also like to say that I own 5 computers (counting my wife's) including an HP, a custom built gaming computer, and even an Apple. I work with a whole host of computers on a daily basis (Macs included) and am not a fanboy of any brand or manufacturer, nor do I engage in the stupid PC vs. Mac debates. I love technology in general, and will go wherever I can get the features I want for the best price to enable me to finish the task at hand. I bought this Studio 1555 to replace my workstation since I wanted to be able to work remotely more easily.

Now on to my actual review:

First off, there is one thing I really dislike about this notebook and that is the keyboard (which I'm using to type this review). It's not a tactile thing, or responsiveness, my typical complaint against keyboards in general. The keyboard squeaks. Not all the time and not loudly, but certain keys on the right side, including the backspace key, make a slight chirping sound that I find very irritating.

What I love about the notebook far eclipses that one irritation, and the screen alone more than makes up for it. As one of the very, very few 15" notebooks that offers full 1080x1920 resolution, it is also one of the cheapest. If you're going to buy just ONE upgrade for this notebook, make it that one. Having that much real estate on such a beautiful screen is worth every penny. SONY is the only other computer maker I could find with 15" notebooks with full 1080p resolution, and they are on average 0 more than this dell. You could argue they are better (less weight, possibly more stylish, etc.) but the bottom line is that the Studio 1555 with a 1080p screen for around a grand is a GREAT deal. Especially considering the screen is beautiful.

The feature set on the Studio 1555 series is also quite good with the newer, faster P series processors leading the way. With their architecture they also use less power, which means a P series notebook will run longer than an identical T series notebook, all things being equal. Windows 7 64-bit being standard is awesome, and once coupled with 4gb (or even 8gb if you want to pay through the nose) of ram, make this a very speedy machine. Boot times are great, and I can easily multitask with several demanding applications with no slowdown.

Aesthetically, the notebook is good, but not fantastic. I elected to get the 'chainlink black' version since I use this notebook for work and didn't need a fancy lid. The layout is functional and logical without being superior (this is where SONY excels--they're probably the only company with a sense of style that rivals Apple). The port configuration is great, with everything you'd expect (HDMI, 3-USB, Esata, SD card reader, VGA) and then a few bonuses (FireWire800, and TWO headphone jacks--fantastic for sharing a BlueRay with someone on a flight, etc...)

The Build quality is average to good. The aforementioned keyboard squeak lowers this category significantly, as does the heat build up on the panel below the keyboard which makes my wrists sweat a little bit. Thankfully Dell did make some solid improvements, including a really good hing for the screen which is heavy duty enough to make me believe the screen will open&close without losing any firmness for years. The charger is adequate, but with a strange layout that defies logic--the power cord (the end that plugs into the wall) is very short at about 3-feet. The single power cable that runs to the ntoebook itself is fairly long, but I'd really like to see dell make a power adapter more like HPs with a nice long cable on both ends (from the wall to the adapter and then from the adapter to the notebook).

Battery life is fantastic and better than I expected. Even when taxing the n-band wireless while streaming videos or downloading files (which uses a lot of power) I can still get 3.5-4hrs out of the notebook. If all I'm doing is word processing, e-mailing, and other light tasks, I can get upwards of 5 hours. If you set your power profile to the minimum, it is possible to get Dell's claimed 7 hours, but you'll have to live with a very dim monitor and no wifi usage to achieve those numbers--not many real world applications where that would work.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

I bought this notebook to replace my workstation in my office. It's more than exceeded my expectations overall. With a better keyboard I'd happily give it 5 stars, but that one element is distracting enough to downgrade the Studio 1555 to 4 stars. If you want a very strong feature set for the price, you have to at least consider the Studio 1555 series from Dell. Check out the comments section of this review for some thoughts on configuration/prices if buying from Dell.

I am not being over dramamtic either.
Until I sent an email to the BOARD OF DIRECTORS at Dell and one of the Officers I would spend as much as 2hrs 45minutes trying to get answers and service to my laptop.
This kind of irresponsible customer support was the norm.
The reps would pass me along for 2 hours or MORE; and I was still dissatisfied.
I had my Dell Studio for less than 6 months when it would not turn on.
I am th only one that uses it, had never removed it from my home and treated it with TLC.
Well hours were spent REPEATING the same story, answering the SAME QUESTIONS, being transferred from Rep to Rep....HOURS!
They finally sent out a local Tech and he could not fix it. He told me that it is not unusual for Dell to dispatch "malfunctioning" replacement parts. Imagine..."not unusual".
More time spent and NO resolution to the problem.
More time on the phone. More getting tossed from Rep to Rep.
Finally I was sent a box to return the laptop to Dell for
More lost time time to get together with FEDEX-twice, outgoing and incoming.
I finally received the laptop back and it was a disgrace. INK MARKS ON THE COVER, DENTS TO THE INTERIOR PLASTIC PARTS, STICKY DROPS ON THE KEYBOARD.
Here we go again.
HOURS on the phone and they finally agree to have the parts replaced. Sure???
The local tech called twice. Both time disregarding the phone number I requested they use and the TIMES I told Dell I would be available.
When I called DELL (more time WASTED) on the phone to inquire about getting the service technician
to call me back, Dell informed me that the local tech. had sent everything back stating that he had called FOUR TIMES without a callback. Outright lie.
Hours later the SUPERVISOR agreed to call me with details of service call. NEVER HAPPENED.
Now the SAME local technician, repeats his routine of calling at the wrong time and calling the wrong phone !
Did I say 2hrs 45minutes? 4 Reps just to REPEAT the same information 4 different times and to be told in the end that I could call the Tech Dispatch to arrange an appt for service call.
It finally took an INDEPENDENT, NON-Dell contractor to fix the laptop.
DON'T Buy Dell unless you like the worst customer service imaginable and a faulty computer.

I got this laptop as a replacement for my Insprion Laptop. I love this laptop every bit especially after using Inspiron 1525. I love the LCD Screen, battery life and the configuration of this sytem. Windows 7 is really good and it makes me like my laptop even more. This one has the t6600 intel core2duo's centrino processor. Studio laptops stands out in its looks and is comparable to the Hp's. One the bad side, this laptop is a bit heavy.

I bought this laptop to replace a 3 year-old Toshiba Satellite U-205. I did a lot of product research before settling on this one, and I must note that I strongly considered buying an apple but found its features lacking.

Great Features Include:
Very good processor(not the fastest for laptops, but not far off)
Excellent graphics card(doesn't get much better in a laptop)
Blu-Ray Player!(full hd movies wherever you want to watch them without taking up massive amounts of hard drive space)
16.4 inch screen and some nice built in speakers do Blu-Ray movies justice.
HDMI out!(it could not be any easier to hook up to your HDTV, dual monitor support makes computing much more fun)
Great battery life(you can actually use it for a few hours before you need to plug-in, seriously.)
Stylish design.(Mat-black top with shiny VAIO symbol, beautiful screen, keyboard, even the power button looks nice)
Good build quality.(might not be an aluminum uni-body, but it's no piece of junk, very sturdy)
The price is right.
Downside:
HDMI out and a Blu-ray drive do not necessarily mean that you'll be able to use it as a blu-ray player for your big screen. Although the HDMI out enables very convenient use of your HDTV as a primary or second monitor, I've experienced issues trying to play blu-ray on the big screen. I'm not sure if it's because of Windows, WinDVD software, or simply the hardware not being powerful enough. This is the one and only let-down I've experienced with an otherwise great computer.

Horrific Service from Sony -- **LEMON** - Jeff Westover - Salt Lake City, Utah
I purchased this on 9/2/09 and received it from Amazon on 9/4/09. I was thrilled with everything about this laptop as it had just what I was looking for. After dealing with and deleting the massive amount of bloatware Sony put on the thing I loaded up Microsoft Office Professional about a week later. The next day, the laptop inexplicably started typing on it's own -- I couldn't even log on to windows. I called Sony, worked for about an hour trying various things before they determined my keyboard was faulty and it would require service. It took five days but I was impressed when the technican came to my office and fixed it right in front of me. Problem was, changing out the keyboard didn't solve the problem. The tech diagnosed the mother board and ordered it in on the spot. It came and after watching him totally disassemble the thing on my desk about a week later it was determined the replacement board Sony sent was bad. By now, I had had my new laptop about three weeks, having used it for only about six days. I waited another couple of days for another board to arrive and a few more days beyond that for the tech to come to my office. He came, we had a nice chat while he did it all again and got it running. Here it is a week later now - and it is doing it again. I called Sony today and told them that I had been patient enough and just wanted a new unit that they could just swap out the hard drive on. They said no, that I have to send it in to their "service" center -- it'll be another month. So, here I am out 00 and no laptop. There was no talking to Sony. They apologize but do nothing to make this right. I travel extensively and need a reliable machine to conduct business. I have had good luck with Sony in the past but never again will I use them. AVOID AVOID AVOID. I doubt very much they can get this resolved by the time the 12 month warrantee is up. In this economy I cannot see why any company would want to treat a customer in this fashion. I have such a lack of confidence in this machine and in Sony that I plan to sell this lemon as soon as I get it back. I'm in the market for a new machine now -- and it won't be a Sony.

Never Ever A Sony Anymore - GentlemanXP - CA USA
I bought a Sony VAIO VGN-FW280J/H 16.4-Inch Laptop (2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 Processor, 4 GB RAM, 7200 RPM 320 GB Hard Drive, BD-RW, Vista Premium) Gray, in May 2009 for the good price of USD 999.99. I didn't open the box for about one month, because I have 2 other Laptops an Apple and a HP.
Then I used this Sony for about 2 months as a desktop, but not that much, so I didn't move or bring this Sony on th go. Then for somehow it builds moisture inside the LCD, I believe due to the hot weather, I contacted Sony Support, they asked me to send the unit to Sony Repair in San Diego which I did and they received the unit on 10.05.2009. Yesterday on 10.20.2009 at 8 pm I got an email saying that the repair estimate is USD 699.99 plus tax, whaaaaaat?...I called right away asked them to send it back, this is crazy...
I just can not believe that this is a SONY, one of the biggest company in electronics/multimedia/movie industry.
I will never ever buy a sony anymore...

I bought this laptop a little over 2 months ago and it has been nothing short of
being an exceptional laptop. It is very quick and very quite when operating. I have
never had an issue when it comes to overheating. The fan rarely comes on, even when I

Toshiba has poor customer service after the sale - Donald E. Sims - West TN
I purchased one of these and it worked well until I went to move it on a table. With slight pressure, the LCD screen broke under my thumb and Toshiba wanted over 0 for repairs. Their customer service is horrible and so far I've spent 8 hours on the phone talking to different people to no avail.
This was my third Toshiba and I've owned several other laptops and have turned them in the same manner. Please do your research about Toshiba laptop issues before making a purchase!

I was very excited to get this laptop since I read so many good reviews on it. Maybe I just got a lemon, but for some reason this laptop will not turn off (it just reboots itself). I took it to Best Buy and no help. Today it crashed 6x straight (the screen just froze) and the toshiba tech support told me to do a system restore so hopefully that will take care of the problem. I have only had this computer for less than 4 months. Aside from these two problems it's an okay laptop.

Also, as others have said, the fusion finish is nice but it gets dirty very easily. The fingerprints that it leaves on your keyboard are unsightly (I had to get the toshiba keyboard cover for this which is very effective at keeping away dust and fingerprints but it was another I had to spend).

The battery life is quite good but the laptop is a bit on the heavy side (could be a little thinner if you ask me).

If I could go back in time I would have chosen a different laptop.

Toshiba nightmare - flinch -
I purchased the Toshiba M305. Started flickering on the screen then would go dark. Got worse. Sent it back. Started getting flickering again and Hard drive trouble, sent it back two more times. Tried to have it replaced on the 4th time. Told me the warranty was up, tough luck and have a nice day. No customer support, no good techs, no good product.

Cosmetically, the Qosmio looks like a technological piece of art; under the hood, it gets even better. Every time I lay my hands on it, I'm thrilled I made this purchase.

I originally got the X505-Q850 and am posting that review here as well since the 880 is essentially the same laptop and I thought this review would be helpful to people....

I'd been hoping to put off buying a new laptop but the screen on my old HP was failing and I just can't justify sinking money into obsolete tech. I convinced myself I was willing to live with the funky lines running through my screen in favor of being frugal, but with each malfunctioning pixel, it was clear I had to buy a replacement soon.

If you're like me, a new laptop isn't something to be taken lightly. It's a decision I'll have to live with a good many years, so selecting the right model is important since I'll be using it on a daily basis. Well, I'd like to say I did exhaustive research comparison shopping every new laptop, but that simply wasn't the case. I had two basic criteria that eliminated 99% of the laptops on the market: I wanted the largest screen possible and a lighted keyboard.

Enter Qosmio...
(Insert angelic harps here)

Thankfully, Amazon makes it easy to search laptops by attribute like screen size, and the first laptop that came up on my search was the Qosmio x505-Q850 -- the pictures were more reminiscent of an elegant sports car than laptop -- it was love at first sight. The screen was a whopping 18.4 inches, which is huge for a laptop, and much to my surprise, it even had a lighted keyboard!!!

(Angelic choir join the harps and crescendo for dramatic effect...)

Could finding my perfect laptop be this easy? "Calm down," I tell myself, "looks aren't everything." The price isn't cheap, yet it's nearly half the cost of Alienware, it's nearest rival in specs and looks. Excitedly reading the product info, I was thrilled to see the Qosmio's feature set is just as brilliant on the inside as it is on the outside. With the latest quad core processor, a blazing fast solid state drive for the OS, a 2nd SATA drive, 6gb of memory, the latest NVIDIA graphics card, Bluetooth, HDMI output and Blu-Ray drive, this Qosmio is a powerhouse indeed.

Delving deeper, I learned this new Qosmio had just been released and was in limited supply. Even buying direct from Toshiba was a 2 month wait. Amazon had a few in stock but quickly sold out. With more pixels disappearing on my old HP, I kept a keen lookout hoping someone would get the Qosmio in stock soon. I was hoping to buy at Amazon and get triple points on their credit card (every 2500 points gets me a gift card and triple points on a laptop would be near 6000!!) but alas, a different retailer got in a small quantity, and much as I hated to do it, I cheated on Amazon and made my purchase elsewhere.

When my Qosmio arrived, it was a euphoric experience. The box is red and black with a huge red Q on it and the same detailed design that's on the laptop itself. As I peeled back the box tab to open it, the inside flap had little red letters that said "Enjoy your laptop." My heart fluttered, "I will," I thought to myself, "Don't you worry."

Angelic harps reach their apex as I open the Qosmio box. And there it was -- emerging through light beams -- with its high gloss black finish glistening, and points of light sparkling off red metallic accents. I challenge anyone to find a more stunning looking laptop.

Okay, so literary embellishments aside, this really is a great laptop. And Windows 7 is pretty awesome too. Boot up time is lightening fast; 45 seconds tops from the moment I hit the power button and I can click on anything and get going instantly. And this new processor is a total beast too. Photoshop CS4 opens near instantly. A 100gb backup took barely over an hour. And rendering video editing is blazing fast too. I'm not a gamer, so I have nothing to report there, but judging by everything else, it ought to be equally fast in that department.

"Gaming Laptop" is just a euphemism for Fast!

If you see a computer that's touted for "gamers" don't assume that's all it's good for. "Gaming computer" just means fast, and who doesn't want a fast computer?? I've seen several reviews that did speed tests pitting this new Qosmio against its rivals and it outperformed them with ease. Granted, it was the only one with this new processor and as others follow suit, the speed comparisons will level off.

Blu-Ray Rom vs Burner

ROM basically means this drive plays Blu-Ray disks but doesn't burn them. (It does, of course, burn DVD+-RW and CDs.) At first, I was disappointed Qosmio didn't have a Blu-Ray burner. But then I realized I'd rather archive all my video to MPEG4 or WMV and watch it directly off Media Share. I already use Media Share to listen to all my music, so why not do the same with video too? It's way more convenient to access MP3 files digitally than it is to load a CD into a player, just like it's easier to do backups with external hard drives as opposed to disks. Digital files are just faster and more convenient, so a Blu-Ray burner may already be meaningless for my purposes.

HDMI Output

One of my favorite features of the Qosmio is the ease with which it can be connected to my 50" plasma! Just run an HDMI cable from your computer to your plasma and it's good to go! Audio is automatically cut from the laptop and plays out the TV instead. And the picture is full 1080p HD! Play any video clip, surf the web or watch a Blu-Ray movie all on your plasma!! Very cool!! Oh, and in case you're wondering, the Qosmio uses a standard HDMI cable, not the mini size seen on camcorders. And Qosmio automatically detects the HDMI signal and turns on an off the external display automatically. You can have both screens active at the same time, or choose between the two. Combined with my Philips Wireless HDMI transmitter and it all couldn't be easier to use.

Lighted Keyboard

I've read some forums where people were upset the keyboard doesn't stay lit all the time and turns off after so many seconds. NOT TRUE -- the keyboard CAN be set to stay on all the time. On your Qosmio, just go to: >Start >Toshiba >Utilities >HWSetup >Illumination >then under "Keyboard Backlight," click the radio button "FN" then check the box "On." After you reboot, you'll be able to turn the keyboard on and off by using the "FN" + "Z" keys. Personally, I have my keyboard set to stay on all the time, and naturally, it turns off automatically when the computer is shut down. It's also worth mentioning that the keyboard itself is very smooth and QUIET! I don't know about you, but clackety-clack keyboards drive me nuts! No reason why they can't all be virtually silent like this Qosmio's. I have to strain just to hear a sound -- perfect!

No Crapware

I hate it when I buy a new computer and it's loaded with garbage programs that basically amount to advertisers littering all over my new hard drive. Thankfully, Qosmio comes with very little corporate garbage under the hood -- a Microsoft Office trial, Quickbooks, Toshiba Online Backup -- oh, and that crappy Norton I got rid of on my first bootup. Aside from that, it's pretty much a clean install with only the necessities, and I'm thankful for that. I'll install my own programs, thank you very much! Incidentally, Toshiba did a good job of including some helpful utilities and a decent DVD/CD burning program, so kudos there.

Harman / Kardon Speakers

No, these aren't going to fill a room or blow anyone's hair back, but compared to other laptops I've encountered, these speakers are great! If I'm out on the go, they're just fine and plenty powerful. But when I'm home, I do plug in a set of Altec Lansings for a fuller, dynamic sound. But truth be told, I don't listen to music off my laptop. But I do have it connected to my DirecTV receiver and listen to music on my home theater system via Media Share. There's nothing like it!

Eco-Mode

I applaud Toshiba for including this feature but it's nothing I'll ever use. Basically, you can setup this feature so that at a push of a button, your the Qosmio will conserve energy and you can feel good about reducing your carbon footprint. That's all well and good but I didn't spend 2 grand for a sluggish computer. I paid for speed and I want speed, I'll deal with my carbon footprint elsewhere. I take the bus most places, so I have most people beat right there. I'll burn my laptop as fast as I please; thanks much.

Face Recognition Login

Yes, you heard me -- this Qosmio has a built in web cam that's good for video calls via Skype, but it also does one better -- the built in web cam also enables the use of face recognition software in lieu of a password for login! Cool!

Fingerprints

The high gloss finish of this Qosmio is stunning but it also picks up fingerprints with ease. Personally, I don't mind. I wouldn't want to sacrifice the Qosmio's lux look and don't mind wiping it down to keep it shiny and clean. Besides, we've all seen the reports that say people's keyboards have more germs on them than a public toilet, so it's a good thing to wipe your laptop down frequently no matter what.

Solid State Drive

I credit Qosmio for wanting to be on the cutting edge but the solid state drive on this thing is way too small -- only 64gb. It does have a 2nd 320gb SATA which beats most competitors since it spins at 7200rpm. But the SSD is still small for my taste. To make matters worse, the partitions only give 47gb of usable space. The rest is allocated to a Recovery partition and a hidden partition that contains a backup image that can restore your computer to its out of box state. This could be helpful if you're on the go and something happens but I did make my DVD backup disks as well just for good measure. I don't mind how the partitions are laid out, I just need a bigger SSD and plan to upgrade as soon as the price drops from the stratosphere to something reasonable. But having said that, the speed of this drive is amazing so I'll gladly make do in the meantime. I installed my most taxing programs on the SSD and moved all my documents to the secondary SATA. Thankfully, Toshiba included an easy utility that helps migrate the user files to the secondary drive so as to help conserve space on the SSD.

Windows 7 64bit - NOT 32bit

The description says 32bit but this is actually 64bit Windows 7 Home Premium. I upgraded with ease to Ultimate and it did take less than 10 min just as advertised.

There are far too many features to go through them all, but suffice to say, this Qosmio x505-Q850 is truly on the cutting edge. I give it my highest recommendation and am totally satisfied with it in every way. If you want a fast laptop that's on the cutting edge and looks great too, this Qosmio is your WINNER!!!

I have had this Qosmio X505-Q880 with the 1080p screen for a week now. Everything on this machine is great except for a few of the con's mentioned in other reviews ... small touchpad, sound makes popping noises here and there, the mute and sound button clicks when turning off or down. I dont remember if other have complained on this one, but the SSD (65GB) its just not large enough. When they throw in the recovery parition you are left with about 47gb. Now throw in Windows 7, all the Toshiba software, and Windows Updates, I am left with 15GB. I had to install some larger applications such as MS Office 2007 and Adobe Creative Suite on the HDD. It's not such a big deal right now but as I install more software I am sure it will just keep adding into the Primary boot drive. Couple more items. One that had me worried on the first day of testing, the screen started to pixilate in the middle, a long strip. I closed my app and reopened. It was gone. Havent seen it since. This machine is HUGE and I knew that when buying. I think for the same money I might have just purchased a desktop because there is no way I'm going to be lugging this thing around. Would have saved a little money.

Great machine all around however. Windows Experience Rating: 6.6. Not loud and doesnt get hot like you would image a laptop of this size to get. Hopefully it will stay this way even when the machine gets older.

I did weeks of research and configured the same specs everywhere (Dell, HP, Asus, Acer, Alienware) and a comparable computer would have been at least 00 with any other brand.

This thing is FAST and works out of the box unlike the Sony FW i just returned (Whining noise and Bluetooth audio didn't work).

The one minus is that it comes preloaded with a lot of bloatware.

I've owned several laptops and would be considered an intermediate to advanced computer user. I've built my own desktops, tweaked a few laptops and owned various brands of laptops including HP, Fujitsu, Sony and Dell (Inspiron, Latitude and XPS series).

I purchased this laptop directly from Dell (got a better deal than current Amazon pricing) based upon Consumer Report's November 2009 article recommendations where the Dell Inspiron 1545 was rated a 'Best Buy' for every day computing. I purchased it for my husband who will use it primarily for watching an occasional movie from Netflix streaming wirelessly on our home network, emailing to share jokes and videos with his friends, and browsing the Internet.

After setting it up, which other than running into a snag with my home network was a breeze, and playing with it for about an hour, these are my impressions. Yes, there are more 'cons' than pros in this review, but the bottom line found when you ask yourself 'What do I need?' and buy accordingly.

The PROS:
+ Adequate hard drive for storing photos, videos and music.
+ Good speakers! Better than those on my Dell XPS, for which I paid 30% more less than a year ago.
+ 3 usb ports
+ Bright 15.6" display; nice size. I sometimes find the 13" on the XPS too small and the Fujitsu had a 17" which is fine for a desktop replacement but really adds weight to the overall unit.
+ Virtually silent running. No fan noise to speak of and yet...
+ Stays cool to the touch! Not worried about overheating on this one. '
+ 7 in 1 media reader.

The CONS:
- No HDMI ports.
- No wireless 'n' network capable card. Has a card that will do 'b or g' speeds.
- Windows Vista versus the new Windows 7.
- Keyboard is OK, but not as responsive as some others I've used.
- The touchpad seems a tad small and the buttons (left/right click) seem too low by comparison to the keyboard. It could be the size of my hands (small...) but I tend to think it's just the layout.
- The high gloss finish inside and the glossy display (versus matte finish) look cool, but do show fingerprints and reflect light to the point of sometimes being a nuisance.
- There is no 'media only' button like on the XPS where you don't have to turn on the computer to watch a movie, but this is something that higher end laptops would have and may simply be a perk to paying more.
- Heavier than some others, but at under six pounds, it's still not too bad.
- Matte finish on the outside shows greasy smudges where you've touched it. I have the same issue with my XPS, but frankly I've never found a finish that doesn't show something.
- Not a multi-media or gaming powerhouse. It will play dvd's and games, but if you're buying a laptop and really into those things, spend a bit more and make sure you upgrade your video and audio to support your interests. The 4GB of memory really helps as much as anything and I didn't notice any issues with the media I tested.

SET-UP:
Open the box, charge the unit and follow the prompts to get started. You will want to have your home network settings (security code) available to you for ease of set-up, and perhaps a USB flashdrive with your email contacts, favorites, photos and documents available for transfer from another computer, although you can do that via the home network in Windows too.

BATTERY LIFE:
Battery life seems to be about 3.5 hours. I think the 4+ hour estimate is high, but that undoubtedly is also based upon what things you are doing on the laptop and mobile power settings.

CONCLUSION:
If you purchase this Dell you are getting a solid workhorse for every day computing for a fair price. I think it's quality is certainly higher than an Acer with the same specs, and backed by a 1 year warranty from Dell. (Having had a Dell laptop that needed the keyboard replaced recently, I truly think the warranty service provided by Dell - they came to my house the next day - is exceptional and worth the small price hike over some other brands.)

The Dell Inspiron 1545 is great for a student or grandparent who wants to keep up with emailing and basic computing tasks. Regarding this specific model, if it had a webcam and Windows 7, it would be better (there are other 1545 models that have them...), but it will never be a multi-media powerhouse. If looking for HDMI inputs or a fast graphics card for gaming, look elsewhere.

WIRELESS NOTE: If you are having trouble connecting to a wireless network, be sure you check the included 'set-up guide', page 10, to find the wireless key on your keyboard. You can inadvertently press this key and turn off your wireless capabilities. Handy on airplanes... not so handy at home.

Its an excellent laptop. Great screen definition. It works very fast, vista isnt heavy enough to slow down the dual core performance. Havent tried blue ray yet but I wonder if there is going be a significant change in the screen definition.
Vista incuded a lot of software that I wont be needing, but Norton expires only in 60 days. Norton works very fast too, and its great. It would have been nice a year subscription included. I got the feeling like buying a car and having to pay for the wheels 60 days after the purchase. Yeah I know this kind of software comes only for 60 days, but maybe its wrong to expect some extra courtesy when buying this "Mercedes Benz" Anyway Im very happy with the laptop. I fully recommend it.

I typically use the computer for listening to music, hooking the hdmi to my tv to watch 720p movies, building web sites with Microsoft expression, downloading a lot of content from the internet, use video conferencing, and use remote desktop to connect to and fix other computers.

Pros
- dual core does an excellent job of multitasking for a 1.3Ghz low voltage
- chicklet keyboard is a pleasure to type on, just the right feedback
- never gets warm or loud under any condition
- actually will last up to 8 hours
- very solid build quality
- includes multi touch track pad
- very thin and light
- very fast wifi with draft N technology
- bright screen
- very stable with Windows 7

Cons
- cpu can easily hit %100 usage if playing videos (1080p files skip)or heavy multitasking
- GMA 4500 video provides only basic capability and kills your windows index score
- screen quality has limited viewing angles and is some what washed out (it is average compared to other notebook screens, however not a deal breaker)
- difficult to see keyboard in low light (needs back lighting)
- lacks bluetooth and esata ports
- multi touch trackpad gestures do not work as well as they should
- trackpad button is very stiff and can wear down your thumb or fingers
- speakers are very soft

Overall if I had to make the purchase again, I definitely would. Why? For such a low price it does an excellent job of combing good performance with amazing battery life. This is my first Acer and I am very happy so far. However, I still need a powerful desktop though for heavy duty work and bluray ripping. Check Special Offer Price!

The 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo processor will either sink or swim in Dells mainstream portables depending upon its reception here. Matched with 3GB of PC2-5300 DDR2 that promises to run even the thirstiest applications with aplomb, the major yardstick is not whether Core 2 Duo can keep pace with the Pentium M (Dothan), but whether it can perform without reducing battery life to minutes rather than hours. Yet having said that, it is easy to think that the Inspirons sole point of interest is the aforementioned CPU. You see, this is Dells attempt at an all-in-one laptop: a workhorse that sits as comfortably in office attire as it does in casuals. With fast-access email buttons, ample memory and a weight of 3.6kg, its a suitable office-based and on-the-go machine. Yet with Media Center bundled in, to give the control buttons at the foot of the casing something to do, and a 17in widescreen display, the Inspiron seems built for handling movies as comfortably as Excel spreadsheets. Visually, the arctic silver and black casing is an interesting reworking from Dell. The colour scheme and layout of the keyboard and tracker pad hint at a classiness that some might dismiss as tacky trend-chasing. But it actually works rather well, giving the screen a comfortable border in gentle silver rather than harsh black.

I pre-ordered this laptop through Amazon so I could avoid the upgrade path of buying a laptop with vista and needing to hassle with the free upgrade. So I was waiting 3 weeks and anticipating having a cool huge beautiful spiffy computer. It is all that, but with that said, the windows 7 home premium is stripped down so i cant setup machinee to network with my work/office network and printers. So I had to buy a freaking anytime upgrade for 89.99 to get enterprise functionality. BS! I also learned that if you want language functionality you need to anytime upgrade to 7 ultimate. ALSO, problem with internet explorer 8 working with windows 7. I couldn't get my outlook to work right when attempting to launch a browser session from within outlook, clicking on an embedded link. After spending 3 hours with a knowledgeable friend trying to edit the registry settings, gave up and installed mozilla firefox.

The laptop is a desktop replacement so it eats battery life! great multmedia machine, quite impressive when pulling it out for clients for powerpoint show. The best thing I like so far is that I can zoom my browser session to 150% and dont need to use reading glasses when on-line and don't need to scroll sideways on the bottom scroll bar to see the whole web link or document.

I am not happy with Microsoft not doing the development work ahead of time and not being told ahead of time that the windows 7 home premium is really lame and offer me a reduced price upgrade path when i ordered the laptop. They should offer a adder to get windows 7 professional and 0 for the ultimate version. Check Special Offer Price!

Pros: It has almost everything someone would want. My 4 year old loves the touch screen for websites that allow him to interact (ex fisher price website). Mine came with Windows vista, and I've been waiting for my windows 7 upgrade for 2 months now, hope to see it soon. Screen is bright, touch screen is great, finger print id is awesome, and computer is fast once you remove the bloat software HP installs.

Cons: I've owned this laptop for 3 months now and while it's great to have all these bells and whistles I can't stand the Fan noise. The fan is running 100% about 75% of the time and it's noisy. Also the heat from this laptop is crazy. My dell 6400 insp. ran somewhat hot but not as bad as this. Like I stated above I'm still waiting for my copy of windows 7, but looks like this one comes with windows 7 already.

Conclusion: Being this is the only one like this on the market (reminds me of my ipod touch) I'd buy it again. Hope HP comes out with a solution to the fans making so much noise.

It has vga out but no svideo or hdmi out, other than that its great.

I've had this about one month now and so far not one issue. Compared to the last Compaq I bought this thing is way better. It seems that Compaq has learned about it pervious errors in making "introductory" laptops and corrected their mistakes. It has better quality parts than what compaq was using four years ago in its presario laptops. For example, the keyboard has keys that actually come off and go back on easily; and the machine is much more modular so taking user serviceable parts out and replacing them is easy (again keyboard is a good example, it requires only removing the battery and three screws which are aptly labled with a litte picture of a keyboard).

It seems like more thought went into this product than previous presarios. Its 4GB and dual core processor make running vista a reality. Putting vista64bit on it gives me a leg up because I actually have some 64bit apps to run on it, the most aggressive being the Oracle database. Screen is nice, keyboard is nice, touchpad works well, cdrom responds quickly when given a disc, the 8200m geforce video means I can actually run all but the most recent of games which is one of my requirements, 250gb disk lets me load lots of those games, and store lots of data in my database.

Again about the only thing I am sorry about is that it has no HDMI port and so I cannot hook up a hdmi monitor as a second monitor. It does have a vga out port so I can hook up a monitor that accepts vga input.

For the price I paid there is no way I will find anything better. Shop around, the price on this varies considerably, especially if you can find a special at a chain store. At the price I paid, I wish I could get another three for the family, but they sold out in one day all across my state. In my mind unless a person is a major gamer who has to play the most recent games, or has some special need, this laptop is more power than you can want. It will do all the basics great (internet, office toolset, email, even run a large database how bout that).

Lastly, sevice is good. My daughter's cat peed on the keyboard and shorted out a couple of keys. It took 40 minutes, but HP agreed to ship me a new keyboard for 70$ which I replaced easily rather than having to send it in for repair which would cost a minimum of 200$. Here is a recap:

1) dual cpu and 4gb make vista runnable and snappy
2) 8200m geforce video makes gaming possible for most gamers
3) inexpensive, but not junk, parts feel like quality
4) screen is nice sized with good picture at its highest resolution
5) 250gb disk gives plenty of space
5) has no problems like prior presarios (no overheating, no lost keys, no slow cpu, no dead pixels)
6) HP service came through for me and let me save 130$

** only negative is it that though it has a vga out port, it lacks a hdmi out port
